CPLD Updates

We recently installed a new XGS and as part of the initial installation, we were notified of a CPLD update.

Is there any way to tell what version of CPLD firmware is running on an XGS?

What is the process for any future updates? Are these only ever released as part of an SFOS update or is this something that may be released separately at some time?

As the process requires powering off the XGS rather than just a reboot, what are the implications of installing a new SFOS but not re-powering the XGS (I'm thinking of remote updates)?

  • This is a rare condition to update the CPLD. If needed, you will have to unplug the Firewall device once. The firewall will still continue to work as expected without this, but you should think about a timeframe. I would not expect those requirements to occur often.

  • Not from a easy way to tell. But to be honest, it does not matter. CPLD will be updated via Firmware Upgrades,  if needed. And there was only one upgrade yet.

  • I hope there is going to be better communication of the need to re-power the router. Which SFOS version contained the CPLD update? I can't find anything in the release notes for  the variants of 18.5 and 19 EAP doesn't really have release notes, just a 'What's New' page.

This is going to be important information for anybody supporting XGS remotely. For some sites we support, the XGS is in a secured location that we have to arrange for a third party to access.

  • The firmware will run without unplugging the firewall. So you are not forced to do this. And Reboots etc. are not impacted by this. So you dont have to do anything. The last CPLD update was in V18.5 GA. Which means the XGS Firewall you got was a EAP Appliance in the first place.

  • There is also a CPLD update in v19 EAP.

I suspect that CPLD updates will not be that rare over the next year or two as more functionality gets moved over to it.

  • What is the CPLD? Something having to do with XStream?

  • I believe the Complex Programmable Logic Device is the dedicated Xstream Flow Processor in the XGS models.

  • That is correct. It is the hardware chip, which needs a power off to update this part of the component.
