Installation of SW-18.5.2_MR-2-380.iso on old PC

Hello all,

I work with the actual Sophos XG in my line of work. I thought I would familiarize myself with them more in my home network using the SW-18.5.2_MR-2-380.iso for Intel Hardware.

I have the following hardware:

Mainboard: ASUS H81M-C
Onboard: Realtek GB Ethernet
RAM: 8 GB

Added Adapter: D-Link DGE-530T V.D2

Storage: 160 GB SSD

I was successful in loading the Sophos OS and it recognized that there were 2 adapters, but only 1 would be enabled but the D-Link would appear as disabled in the Web UI and I could not do anything from the Console with Port 2. I read one other article on the forum regarding the D-Link DGE-530T, both an older model and older version of the Sophos firewall software. The NIC was to be incorporated in the next revision and that is the last I have found on this particular NIC. I realize this is not the best NIC, but Is it supported?

Thanks in advance.

  • you would be better off finding an intel NIC, not i-219, i-225 series.

  • Yes, similar answer on the post I read from the past. I have found and ordered an Intel EXPI9402PTBLK 10/100/1000Mbps PCI-Express Two Gigabit Copper Server Connections which will give me an additional interface. I neglected to mention the processor is an Intel G3420 Dual Core @ 3.2 GHz. Should make a solid firewall.

  • Hi,

the box should work well with that CPU, but the the performance will depend on what functions you enable. Please check your CPU performance once you start adding rules and policies.

Also disable speedstep power saving functions to get the best out of your XG.

  • As this is my home network and I don't have children to be concerned about torrenting and or some form of viewing pornographic sites, I won't need the app blocking features. I will be using Site to Site VPN and SSL VPN, routing traffic for 5 VLANs to the Internet. Well, one of those will be the DMZ. I will also be doing a bit of port forwarding for gaming servers, Web/FTP servers. I came from a Cisco background 8 years Cisco TAC, and the Sophos is quite new to me. We have some properties with Cisco ASAs, but the company I work for prefers the Sophos. They also prefer to use some sort of UI and at Cisco, we were CLI so much, that we would disable the Web UI on every device we worked with.

  • It is not the streaming that puts the CPU under stress, but multiple small connections like web browsing. Once a stream has been validated then there is very little load on the CPU.

  • Thankfully I do the most with regard to surfing. Primarily there is a lot of Streaming of; Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc. I will definitely post the results once I receive the Intel NIC and put the system in production.
