XG vs UTM

So, we are a small MSP, long time UTM user, around 20-ish UTM's at clients sites. I am also very familiar with Cisco and Checkpoint products from previous jobs. Love the good ol' UTM.

We are currently migrating our UTM to XG https://showbox.tools/ https://speedtest.vet/, since we will have to migrate all our clients at some point.

My question.. Is there anyone who has been using both extensively, and who likes the XG better?

It really blows my mind how unintuitive it is, and honestly it feels like a huge leap backwards. Just the idea of having to use that product, let alone migrate at least 20 firewalls from UTM, makes me seriously consider a job change.

  • I used UTM personally for a couple of years before switching to XG as it was the long term future for Sophos and i was looking for a solution for customers (and am also very familiar with Cisco). I hated the UTM interface and found its methodology very difficult to understand. I much prefer the XG interface and methodology (although it has its quirks). I don't know how much of your pain is just because you are very familiar with one product and not the other and they are very different, despite doing the same job. Maybe you will always miss the UTM interface, I don't!

The one area that may be something to watch for is that the XG lacked some features the UTM had (at least at the time I switched over) so you need to make sure it fulfils all your requirements.
