XG85w backup restore onto XG87w

I mistakenly assumed that I could upgrade our XG85w and transfer its backup/settings onto an XG87w (its successor) but it appears the firmware for the XG85 is v17 only and v18 only for the XG87. So the backup won't restore.

I tried importing XG85 > XG87 settings instead and it did nothing. It acted like it was working but then it stopped without an error.

Did Sophos leave us no backup or settings upgrade path between these two devices?

    Hi Wineoh,

    Please share the current firmware running on each Sophos XG 

    From CLI : 

    Follow the steps below to check the Serial Number of Sophos Firewall:

    1. Sign in to the CLI Console via Telnet or SSH. You can also access the CLI Console by clicking Admin > Console in the upper right corner of the Admin Console screen. 
    2. Choose option 4. Device Console.
    3. Run the following command to check the details of the device, including the Serial Number:
       console> system diagnostics show version-info

    Before you shared the output here make sure you don't share the appliance serial number.

    XG85w = 17.5.17.837 (latest version as of this post)
    XG87w = SFOS 18.5.2 MR-2-Build380 (latest as of this post)

    Note that I did try to import settings rather than restore backup. The import settings did appear to import something although it strangely never prompted after with any sort of confirmation.

    Just to be clear: I should be able to restore this XG85w Backup to the XG87w, yes?

    As best I can tell from that article, there is no mention of an XG not running SFOS, so apparently there is no upgrade path from the XG85 to XG87.

    I guess I can open a support ticket to find out whether Sophos has ever helped someone transfer settings from an XG85 to XG87.

    Hi Wineoh 

    Please check by upgrading XG85w = 17.5.17.837 to SFOS 18.5.2 MR-2-Build380 firmware, take the backup from latest firmware and restore on XG87.

    Note: Please make sure you take backup of  XG85w = 17.5.17.837 before you perform the same activity

    V17.5 MR17 is not supported. See. docs.sophos.com/.../sf_185_rn.html

    Do you have a backup from a older Version?

    Hi, I don't see anywhere to download SFOS 18.5.2 MR-2-Build380 for the XG85w. Device says I am at latest firmware.

    You cannot upgrade XG85. Do you have a older Backup of the V17.5 MR16?

    For the XG85? Not entirely sure but I do have a backup from 9/21 and 03/21.

    Why would a v17 xg85 ever work to restore to a v18 xg87?

    See my Link above. There is a version compatibility matrix. 

    XG85 is locked to V17.5 and does not get V18. But essentially the configuration is supported.

    Ah, you are correct. Just confirmed this with my September 2021 backup.

    I was tempted to not import everything and just recreate it from scratch but I will try this (after I backup my current xg87 config in progress).
