Connect Router and Access Point to XG Home

Hi,

I'm sharing fiberglass internet (bit expensive) with my neighbours, and we have installed XG home in a PC. We have created username and password for each user and installed quit a few access points and some routers to the network. But now we have trouble with the configuration. We want the Wi-Fi devices also act like LAN port and offer captive portal for authentication. For router, I know that the router should login and the devices behind doesn't need any authentication, which is easy for us to connect the household devices. Now my question is, could anyone please show me a direction to keep all the LAN and WLAN devices in the same network? My Sophos XG installed PC has only 2 Ethernet port, So, one is WAN, and only one is LAN, and all devices are connected to the same port. I would really appreciate some suggestions.

Thank you in advance

  • You may configure the AP with Bridge to AP-LAN or bridge to VLAN.

So WiFi and LAN can share the same Subnet.

  • Hi Dirk,

thanks you for your quick response. One more question. Can I user router too? and if the access points aren't from Sophos (one of my neighbour is a cheapskate) will it be visible to the firewall. I can't test now, cz the PC that I bought is uefi and too advance for Sophos, it ran for couple of hours then get disconnected, now I am waiting for a second hand old bios based PC delivery.

    Thanks

  • Hi : If the access points are not from Sophos, you may configure those access points as well in bridge mode and turn off DHCP on that access point, so any client device connected to SSID of that access point will get IP from XG (If XG has DHCP configured) and access point will act as in wireless switch in bridge mode however you will not be able to manage non-Sophos AP via Sophos XG (Wireless Protection)and you need to manage access point settings by login over that access point itself.

  • Hello Vishal,

thanks for your replay. For my home I'll use Sophos AP, but if someone connects a router on lan network, will that person get connection? I remember in my uni dorm, we had a firewall that supports router connection , and the routers used to ask for authentication for the first time and then all the connected devices with that router wouldn't need authentication and got new ip from the router. I'm just curious, if it's the same. And I know it's not secure

    Thanks

    Mubin

  • Hi,  The scenario which you mentioned in your last comment seems to be Router (Wireless router) may be configured in Gateway mode and not in bridge mode. In that case, for all wireless clients, your wireless router will act as in gateway and due to that first time it will ask for authentication and the rest of the connection will not require authentication. However, this would not be the situation with the Wireless router in bridge mode as per my previous comment explanation.
