Can't ping certain IP addresses over VPN

We have an XG 135 (SFOS 18.0.4 MR-4) and there are a couple of IP addresses that we have never been able to ping over the VPN but can ping on the local network. The majority of addresses can be accessed. Until now we have lived with this.

However, we have just put a new server online and encountered this problem.

I have checked the firewall logs and can't see any entries corresponding to either the valid ping or the blocked one so this doesn't seem to be a good way of debugging it.

Any ideas?

  • Hello Alan,

check the default gateway of that server, it has to the VPN-gateway.

  • Thanks, the gateway is correct.

However, after posting this I discovered that I could access Remote Desktop on the new PC after all, so it wasn't the same problem that I had experienced before. We can't ping any PC over the VPN which is not a problem.

This did prompt me to check the original PC that I have never been able to access Remote Desktop on over the VPN. It turns out that it had the wrong subnet mask which was ok for the internal network but not VPN traffic. After changing this to the correct one the problem is solved.
