Sophos XG Firewall for Home - DHCP and other questions...

Thinking about deploying this as I have an unused Dell Optiplex 9020 Micro Intel Core i5-4590T 2.00GHz that I am looking to use as a donor.  Here are the questions I have...

(1) Would this machine work for starters.

(2) Once the sophos software has taken over and done it's thing... does the new device issue my DHCP or do I still need an attached router to do that.

(3) Also in the mix is a computer running Microsoft Server 2019 should I just use windows defender firewall and issue DHCP from there and not even mess with Sophos?

better yet... let me just put my cards down on the table and see what thoughts you have as the best setup.

(1) Motorola Cable Modem with Comcast Gig-Speed Internet
(2) Dell OptiPlex 7070 Micro i7-9700 8-Core with16GB RAM and 512GB SSD (This has Server 2019)
(3) Buffalo TeraStation 4-bay 8gb NAS
(4) Netgear Nighthawk xs6 router

  • Hi,

your server will be fine, you will use 4 cores and 6gb of ram. Now the NICs are the important part, you need two and not intel i219 series. You might ned to install a smaller disk of around 120gb otherwise the install will take a long time while it formats the drive.

You can assign the DHCP function to the XG if you so desire, the DHCP is enabled by default in router mode at installation time. The XG will give you more protection, though it will require more configuration for you to get optimal performance/security.

You will not be able to manage the AP from the XG.

The modem would be best in bridge mode.

When you apply for the licence make sure you get the home user licence not the trial licence (life of 30 days).

After you have installed and got the basics running please feel free to ask for more help if required.
