User can't stay connected to SSL VPN

Hi, we have one user whose SSL VPN connection doesn't work. It will connect and indicate a green traffic light for about 10-20 seconds, but during this time he is unable to access network resources. Then it drops and turns back to a red+yellow light icon. The log we see is below, and it just loops with the last few lines and never successfully maintains a connection. No one else is having this issue.

I've isolated the issue to his computer. He's tried using the VPN on three different networks (his home network, his mobile hotspot, and a public WiFi) with the same result every time. I've tried rebooting, disabling Windows Firewall, running a route table flush and rebooting, flushing DNS... nothing seems to work. And we've uninstalled and reinstalled too many times to count.

It appears the culprit is this:

Thu Aug 12 09:47:28 2021 write TCPv4_CLIENT: Connection reset by peer (WSAECONNRESET) (code=10054)
Thu Aug 12 09:47:28 2021 write TCPv4_CLIENT: Connection reset by peer (WSAECONNRESET) (code=10054)

Thu Aug 12 09:47:28 2021 write TCPv4_CLIENT: Connection reset by peer (WSAECONNRESET) (code=10054)
Thu Aug 12 09:47:28 2021 read TCPv4_CLIENT: Connection timed out (WSAETIMEDOUT) (code=10060)

Any ideas?

  • There are different options for the problem....
Where is the client located ? Possible the firewall at this location tries to  inspect port 8443 (a typical alternative HTTPS port - that's why I use 1194).
Or VPN / OPENVPN is recognized and blocked by Firewall or ISP or others after the first connection is established .

  • Hi dirkkotte, thanks for your response. The thing is we've turned his firewall off on his computer (unless there's some hidden one I couldn't see?) and we've tried several different networks with different gateways/different ISPs, including his mobile hotspot, and the issue persists regardless of what router/network he's connected on.

  • do you try another device ... is the problem bound to the user or the device?

  • Hi Dirk, i am having the same issue. Using a sophos xg firewall at the office and the sophos vpn client. No matter what network i use or what machine I use, i experience the issue. The odd thing is my peer took my laptop home with him and it worked without issues using my account.

  • Seen similar with Microsoft-DA.
The cause of this problem seemed to be UDP. Some providers give you a private IP, and you and many others stand behind a single public IP ... the possible UDP connections can be overflowed and dropped. (some Cable-TV provider in Germany)
Switching to SSL-VPN with TCP solves this problem.

Are you using UDP? It may be more stable with TCP.

  • Hi Dirk, our vpn and firewall are set to only use TCP. Not sure what else I can try. I did inquire with my peer and he is using COX at his home. I have turned off UDP on the ATT router with no luck in connection staying active. I really need to get additional advance help with this issue. I may be forced to change services if Im unable to get this resolved.

    Thanks!
    Mike
