you will need a software licence either trial or a business software licence. your hardware licence will not run on a vm.

Just adding to rf_cat and prism, If you just want to test things on a test VM appliance, Just get the Sophos XG home edition. Download the ISO after signing up and deploy it as a normal VM (Just like you do with VMs in general). 

XG Home Edition is limited to 4 cores and 6 GB of RAM

What is the difference between Sophos XG home edition and the VM based Sophos Virtual Applaince ? Is the configuration same for both?

providing the VM has the same number of ports as the XG135 then you can import your configuration into he XG135. The limitation is th amount of memory and ram that can be used by the home version.

How many ports does your PC have and that setup will be difficult to setup.

My PC has only 1 port. Since I am using VMWare Workstation I can add as many as virtual NICs required. There is only 1 physical NIC in my PC. I want to achieve as mentioned earlier the scenario with the said configuration. Is it possible and how ? Please advise

You will need to setup VLANs on the vm to enable your setup to work and you will not be able to import the configuration into your production XG. You will need to connect your pc to l3 switch with multiple VLANs to differentiate each network connection. Very messy.

So in conclusion experimenting with Sophos Virtual Appliance on VMWare is not possible as far as my scenario is concerned. Hope this is what you want to conclude.?

No, it is possible, but for you as a beginner you are making the setup very difficult. In reality you really need at the very least two real nics and maybe a third one to provide management access to the vm device to allow for configuration failures.
