Will an HP T620 Plus be able to handle IDS/IPS on a gigabit connection?

Like the subject says.... will an HP T620 Plus (AMD quad core gx-420CA cpu) be able to handle packet sniffing duties on this system while utilizing a 1 gig symmetrical line or will it choke?

I'll be dropping an Intel 340 NIC into it.

Thanks

  • Other options I've read about... old Dell server with a Xeon CPU or Qotom i5 based box.

Problems I've seen reported regarding the Qotom/Protecli type boxes is I can't find anything concrete on whether they have enough horsepower to do IDS/IPS on a gig internet connection. I see people talking about 'low CPU/RAM usage while on a 250Mbps connection or 300Mbps but just wondering if these boxes can handle all the extra security without slowing down a 1 gig connection and if they DO, what kind of CPU is needed to keep up to speed........

  • Hi,

if you look at the higher end XG hardware you will find some of them have e3-12xx series and the really top end with its of users have i5 and i7s.

In your case an e3-1240 or one of the newer E series should be adequate, that is from my reading of the hardware.
