SFOS 18.5.0 GA-Build289 is available... should I?

New XGS-87 which came with 18.5.0 GA-Build264 installed, so this is my first potential upgrade. I don't see any news (yet) on the site, so was wondering what it does.

From the model, you can guess that my network is small so I don't have to be as conservative in upgrades as enterprise customers. Do folks around here with smaller networks generally track updates, or do they tend to lag a release or even a version behind?

  • V18.5.0 GA is the commonly known public build for XGS Hardware as for now. Build 289 is the latest version and i am running this on several appliances without any problems.

  • OK, great. My short list of firewall appliances was Sophos, Fortinet, and PAN. Couldn't afford PAN. Liked Sophos and bought an XGS. Quite a few Fortinet folks seem to not adopt firmware until it reaches version X.3 status. (I've also seen this hesitancy in the video editor world, which is also very real-time-data-oriented.) Sounds like Sophos tends to do a fair amount of testing before GA releases.

(For that matter, I ran on beta MacOS for many years with very few problems. Finally got off of the beta train early this year because of video editing projects and not wanting to take chances with stability.)

Though I would still prefer to see the release notes of something before installing it, so I could have an idea of what it addresses or adds and hence could prioritize whether I need it, want it, or if there's no rush. On other software I've skipped minor releases that didn't really do anything for my use case. (For example, a HA bug or new feature doesn't do anything for me with a single XGS.)
