HA and licence transfer

We have been having issues getting the HA up and running since migrating to XG.  Even with upgrades from MR1 through to MR4 the HA just keeps failing and both notes just keep swapping between primary and auxiliary(worked perfectly on UTM)

We have been advised to build a new XG from ISO and to restore the configuration.

Question is we want to rebuild the existing HA auxiliary that is not doing anything as the new primary XG.  My thoughts were to build the new XG server, restore the configuration and then licence with a trial.  Then we would shutdown the currently running XG and bring up the newly built XG on the trial.  Once we are happy that all is working, I was thinking then we would transfer the licence from the old XG to the newly built XG.  After a few days I would rebuild the old XG with the same version of firmware and then setup the HA again.

Would this work?
