Static IP MAC mapping - Within or outside lease range?

When you create a Static IP MAC mapping, should you use an IP outside the DHCP lease range or within it (or can you do either)? Simple question but I can't find the answer anywhere.

  • this needs to be outside the dynamic range

    example:

this is the message you get, when you try to create statics within the dynamic range:

  • LOL. Thanks . Clearly if I'd tried it I would have got my answer! Generally though, I like to make sure I know what I'm doing before I try and change things, especially on a live network.

Have to say I'm pretty disappointed in Sophos' implementation of this (not for the first time). This is only marginally better than setting static IPs on the endpoints. On most sites we are using Windows Server DHCP and its just a case of right clicking the existing lease and 'reserving' it. With Sophos I will have to give them new IPs and then edit the entries in all the software tools we use that access those IPs in. Even worse, as its DHCP, I'm not sure when their IP will get renewed and change unless I force a DHCP renewal on the endpoint.

I wasn't really expecting this problem. We have a 3 week lease to avoid changes in IP so none of the assigned IPs should change anyway. I suspect it happened when we rebooted the XG following upgrade to the newer MR5 (from the earlier MR5). Still shouldn't have happened as the endpoints should renew with the same IP before expiry and the XG shouldn't release addresses until they are expired.

1 point for for their answer, 0 points to Sophos for their implementation.
