XGS Licensing

Hi

I have been using different UTM devices for 10+ years now and we are thinking about upgrading to the XGS but I have found out the licensing is strange

could I have someone from Sophos explain why spam email scanning is no longer a basic license and now requires an option license on top of an existing license?

  • why?

did they make the change to Sophos licensing model?

I don't want a price at all what I am after is an explanation so I can explain to the company I am working for as to why we have tp pay extra now to do email scanning and webserver protection as these are part of the current licensing model we are using.

  • It is a response to the market and the current situation going forward.

Many customers moving to cloud based solutions and do not need the on premise email protection / web server protection, as they move to Office365 and other vendors. As the bundle got new features, Sophos excluded other features from the bundle and make them as a additional item. You can purchase them, if you want, or look into other ways to solve your setup, for example Central Email or ZTNA for WAF.

You should talk to your local Sales Rep, if you need to renewal your current license or you want to migrate to the new platform, as they can clearly explain to your the best setup.

  • All i see there is a greedy move to push even more money out of your customers.

As those features were removed from the Base licence did it get cheaper? I bet not.

And in those factsheets i don't see anything new added to the base licence for comparison

  • Sophos did not remove any license from the base license. Its still the same feature set. Email was never part of the Base license.

    See: https://www.sophos.com/en-us/medialibrary/PDFs/factsheets/sophos-xg-series-appliances-brna.pdf

Sophos simply removed the Fullguard bundle and built a new bundle. This new bundle reflects more likely the need of the customer and includes more features and new features (Sandstorm and Central Orchestration).

Thank you for the response and explanation, TBH I was confused about the whole setup and have been using the appliances for quite a few years now with different companies. we run an on-premise internal cloud across multiple sites and the email and webserver are mandatory for this type of system, we were horrified to originally find out it was not part of the bundle but as long as we can still utilize we are happy.
