Hi,
I have a dedicated wired VLAN for IOT devices and one wireless network using APX320 which is being bridged to this particular VLAN.
I am running several Google Chromecast devices in this VLAN, all in the same network subnet. Some devices have a wired connection and some are wireless. For quite a long time already I've experienced issues with these devices. Sometimes they stop streaming with no reason or they disappear randomly.
I know that they use multicast discovery to discover each other but I was under the impression, that this can't be the issue because they are all in the same network without inter-vlan routing or anything else needed.
Recently I stumbled across an article which said: "mDNS traffic may not be forwarded correctly between the wired and wireless interfaces of a Wi-Fi AP or router". So was wondering if that's the explanation for my issues with chromecast devices. For testing purposes I put some of the wired devices onto the wireless network (those devices that have both, wifi and wired ethernet). And this seems to solve the issue. Can someone confirm this observation or has similar issues?
However, not all of the devices do have a wifi connection and therefore I am still looking for a solution. What I've read so far is:
- Sophos doesn't seem to support mdns reflection.
- Setting up a Avahi server was mentioned to solve this. However most of the times this is being used for inter-vlan mdns reflection while I need some wireless-wired reflection on the same vlan.
- Multicast routing doesn't do the trick either based on community posts I read.
Do you have similar experiences and/or ideas how to solve this issue?
Best
Pete
