What is the best approach for a home lab user

Hello

I am a home user with a big family and an IT person who likes to play with technology own site https://brokescholar.com/ I stumbled on Sophos because I wanted something with good DPi and Web filtering.

I ended up installing Sophos XG 18 and running the 30 day trial..I love it. However, since then I am wondering what will happen after the 30 days? Will I lose all ?

I then did some research and found there is a free UTM, I tried to get it but never got the email :) but that is another story. Don't know if UTM runs on VMware..

So my question is what is the best option for me to run on VM and continue to have web filtering and app filtering functionality? Should I stop using XG because after expiry it will be useless and get  Free UTM?and what does free UTM lack?

I don't mind spending some license cost but this is only for home so I want it reasonable.

Any help and guidance in understanding my options is greatly appreciated.

  • Both UTM and XG run on VMs.

FOr a home user with many devices the XG is best. You will need a devices that has a real 4 core high speed CPU, 6gb of ram and at least 2 intel nice not i219 series. At the end of your 30 day trial the you will revert to the basic firewall. You can save your configuration and apply it after you have installed a home user licence which will require a fresh installation.
