SMTP authentication fails after new XG 135 install

Just replaced our school router with a brand new XG 135 (on ver 18 firmware) and now users can’t authenticate to their email.

our copier can no longer authenticate to SMTP and users are getting certificate & login prompts in Outlook.

We only have a base subscription and no new rules/policies were added. Not sure if the default IMAP rules are breaking things.

Not sure what out of the box feature I need to disable. This is affecting Google mail and provider mail.

  • Do you have a firewall rule enabled, which scans SMTP?

  • No because we use Google workplace (aka g suite) and don’t have a local email server so I did not think we would need an allow outbound SMTP scan rule.

It seems Sophos only provides how to articles for Microsoft users as there is zero mention of G Suite or other cloud email providers

  • Hello Paymon,

Thank you for contacting the Sophos Community!

Make sure the Xg is set to Legacy Mode and you disable SMTP on the LAN and WAN zone if you aren’t going to be using the XG as a Mail Filter.

To change the XG to Legacy Mode go to Email >> General Settings >> Click on Switch to Legacy Mode

To disable SMTP go to System >> Adminsitration >> Device Access >> Disable SMTP Relay for LAN and WAN
