XG hardware recommendation compared to existing equipment

I am currently running a micro server: Supermicro MBD-X11SBA-LN4F-O. This board has a Intel® Pentium® Processor N3700 which is 1.6Ghz with 4 cores and 4 threads.

I want to upgrade because I currently experience very slow response with the web console. The login is slow, the loading of the stats is slow and any thing I try to change or update is slow. I am unable to run the AV because it maxes out the CPU and the internet becomes really slow.

I am looking at the Supermicro MDB-A1SRi-2758F-O. This board has a Intel® Atom Processor C2758 which is 2.4Ghz with 8 cores and 8 threads.

I know that Sophos XG home can not utilize the 8 cores (only 4).

Will I gain enough processing power to solve my issues and be able to run the AV?

  • Hi,

the issue with your original board is not enough ram, not the processor speed.

i don’t think you gain much in the way of GUI update speed with your new mb, make sure you have 6gb of ram so you can run all available features  to home users  and at least an 70 to 120gb disk.

  • Thanks for the response. I looked and I am running 4GB of RAM. I will add another 2 and see if that fixes my issues.

I also have 120GB SSD installed.

    Thank you!

  • Hi,

wait about 30 minutes after you enable the AV features to allow for updates, your internet will be very slow during this time.

The GUI will still be slow, that is why I went from my lower box back to my Xeon based box.

  • Take a look at a bare bones Lenovo Think Station P340...   Select Linux as an OS and 4GB of RAM (buy another 3x 4GB from Crucial/Micron as 8GB is a stretch with Windows and overhead for a 6GB VM), 256GB SSD, an i3-10320 (4 Core, 8 Threads) and an Intel 350 2-port NIC.  Comes out to C$800-900 with a three year on-site warranty.  You will need to run ESX or Hyper-V as this is a **UFEI boot only** machine and XG doesn't fully support this yet.  I have this configured with minimal rules and IPS and get 950 Mbps through no problem.

  • I have verified that I have 8GB of RAM. So that does not appear to be the issue.

Any other suggestions? I can't spend the money for a new PC. I am willing to go up to around $400. What I buy needs to fit into a 1U server rack space.

  • Hi Jason.

I'd not spend money on Processors I know I can not use. What about a  i3-10100 or i3-10300 (4 Cores, 8 threads) a cheap LGA 1200 mainboard (60€-80€) and 8 GByte RAM.

The C2758 is a very old processor (Q32013). Compare the single thread performance and the performance of 4 cores and you will see a big difference. You should also have a look on the N3700 compared to the C2785.

What do you see when you run top in the extended shell? Which processes are on the top?

  • Hi,

if you want a fast performing GUI, you buy a high speed cpu, if you are happy with a very slow GUI, you buy your atom or slow celeron.

    choice is yours.

  • I have the issue resolved. I upgraded to a Dell PowerEdge 210 with 8GB RAM.

The web interface is extremely fast.

I notice that my CPU usage is below 10%.
