Sophos XG home hardware

Hi Guys! I'm looking to try out the Sophos XG Home version. I'm had installed it on a J3160 mini-box with 4GB or ram. I find the WEB GUI quite slow and was wondering if i upgrade it to a J4105 with 6GB ram, would it better? I'm planning to run services such as IDS and Anti-virus scan. I have previously used UTM and find it quite good. Another option came to mind was getting a 2nd hand Dell SFF with i5-4570 and 8GB ram. Would the dell SFF consume a lot of power? Need your kind advice. My home internet speed is 1Gbps.

  • I was running it on an Pondesk E3845 with 8GB and found it painfully slow re the webui and admin.  Re connection wise for a ADSL 60/20 connection is was fine.  On a 1Gbps connection I can't see it having enough grunt.

I'm running Untangle at the moment with the E3845.  Re Sophos if I press it back into service, it'll be on a Dell PowerEdge R220 with Xeon CPU with 25W TDP rating.  However I don't know the true power draw as I know the 4 port intel NIC wants circa 15W, so add it all up I bet it'll be 100W upwards.

I'm planning on borrowing an electrical measuring meter from a friend in the building trade to determine the draw on both platforms.

If you find the express service tag on the Dell you might be able to locate official support documents that give you a guide re power.

  • Hi,

I tried the lower power boxes and like you found the administration extremely painful and returned to the box in my signature.

  • Yeap. That’s why I’m thinking of changing from J3160 to J4105 with 6GB ram. According to some benchmarks websites, the score is almost 30% to 50% faster. But then again, is 30 to 50% enough so that I won’t be experiencing a slow GUI?

  • The GUI will be faster but, not like the UTM.
