No IP from WAN interface

My ISP recently had a problem where the main fibre connection was cut and the internet was down for two days since this has returned I have cycled my ISP router from standard to modem mode and my USFF Machine running ESX with a VM for Sophos XG no longer picks up an IP via DHCP on the WAN interface.

This previously used to happen when I'd deploy a fresh VM for Sophos and I'd have to keep redeploying a fresh image until it worked.

No matter how many times I power cycle and wait I still can't get an IP from the router in modem mode from an unchanged/fresh install.

Is there any tricks/special rules/commands I'm overlooking to force this to occur?

My current configuration is: Modem mode router -> single interface to ESX host (WAN) -> second interface from ESX host to gigabite switch (LAN)

These are in seperate port groups and correctly mapped in ESX and botha ctive in Sophos:

  • In the past I had an ISP that only would give me a public IP-address on a device that they have registered the MAC-address of.

So when I would need to exchange the router, I would either need to spoof the WAN MAC-address or have the ISP register the new MAC-address before I would get a valid public IP-address. Maybe the same is true for your ISP.

  • Thanks  you led me down the right path with this in mind.

    Solution:

    Turn off Sophos XG

Migrate ISP router from routing mode to modem mode

Wait for modem mode to complete

Turn off coax power (virgin fibre requires power)

    Reboot ISP router

Wait for modem mode to complete

Reboot ESX host and verify both nics are online

Internal IP is now via set via DHCP in Sophos XG

    Power on Coax

Wait for up to 5 minutes and reboot Sophos XG if public DHCP is not set on WAN
