Internal hostname resolution on Sophos XG Home?

Hi all. As I continue to finish setup of Sophos XG Home I’m at the point now where I realize it would be nice to see host names of devices listed in reports. I did some digging but what I found didn’t seem that conclusive for what I was after, or else the instructions were either dated or for UTM. Is it possible to set this up? In my case I have my setup handling dhcp and dns on the Sophos rig itself and figured this would probably be pretty approachable to get configured but so far I haven’t seen anything stand out as a sure fire way to achieve this. Any insight or guides that perhaps I overlooked?appvalley

  • Hi,

the XG does not have the same functionality with DNS and DHCP servers as the UTM. The best option I have found is to create clienteles users for each device after assigning them a static IP address.

  • It’s apparently a limitation of how Sophos XG is designed - the DHCP module uses a separate database from the reporting module, and there doesn’t seem to be a way for them to reference each other. This was mentioned in this thread where I asked a similar question.

  • The issue being you need the will and commitment to make changes so that there is a single database providing that  information. Sophos are scared that the XG will become too bloated providing meaningful management functions and improved reporting to etc.
