Sophos Connect Client does not work with usernames containing "german umlauts"

Hello,

we were faced with the following problem today:

Our XG210 gets usercredentials and user data from an Active Directory Server. This runs without problems. A user can call the user portal of the XG210, login there and also in the XG itself ("Authentication" - "Users") everything is fine.

Now we have a few users in AD with a name like "Müller" or "Körbchen". Those users are unable to use the Sophos Connect Client. Immediately after the entered their username and password in the client's dialogue they get an error "Connection could not be loaded" (or a similar one, the original message in German is "Verbindung konnte nicht geladen werden".

At first I thought it would be a problem with AD but I was unable to find any entries in the event log.

Finally I found this with the client:

1) if I use a correct username/password pair (with an username containing only A-Za-z0-9): everything fine

2) incorrect username/password pair (with an username containing only A-Za-z0-9): as expected an "Authentication error"

3) every username containing german umlauts (ÄÖÜäöüß) with any password (no matter if the username exists or not): "Connection could not be loaded"

In case of (3) the local protocol of the client does only show that the key was opened and closed again.

The used client is the one downloaded from the XG, the MSI file in the ZIP is dated "Sept. 10th, 2020".

Is this "a feature by design" or a bug?

Thx for any help!

Stefan
