V18 MR3 failing to install on J1900 QuadCore / Quad LAN / NVME
I recently switched my firewall from a Sophos UTM 9.x to a Sophos XG v18 system.
The UTM 9.x system was running on a Intel J19000 QuadCore 2Ghz (8GB RAM/60 GB NVME Disk/4 x 1GBit NIC )
and worked flawlessly for years.
Now that the new Sophos XG system is running on a Intel ATOM QuadCore system I thought that I could use the J1900
as a backup system. So I tried to install the latest Sophos XG v18 MR3 release. The installation started fine until the point
where the Report-Partition was about to be formatted. There were some dots (.) showing progress and
I expected the installation to continue after a minute or so. But nothing happend with the exception of one line after the
other filling with dots. 12 hours later (next morning) still the same. The whole screen was filled with dots and it went on like this.
I tried other XG v18 releases such as SW-18.0.0_GA-Build321-321.iso but to no success.
Then it came to my mind that I had similar problems with installing the XG v18 release onto
my new ATOM system. There were problems after the installation finished and the system was rebooting.
What helped there was installing the latest XG v17.5.x release. This worked fine. I then upgraded to XG v18 using the
SW-18.0.0_GA-Build321.SFW-321.sig package using the firmware upload menu from within XG v17.
And it worked fine. After installing the package the XG v17 rebooted and started XG v18, converted the config (there was no config yet)
and started up successfully. All future upgrades since there applied flawlessly.
So I thought this could be the solution for my J1900 box. I installed the latest XG v17 image onto my J1900 box and to my surprise it worked fine.
The system rebooted and was up and running.
I then applied the SW-18.0.3_MR-3.SFW-457.sig through the firmware menu of the running XG v17. The update successfully installed and the system rebooted.
There was a message saying
Starting 18_0_3 (or something similar)
but then nothing happened anymore. The system seems to freeze. NUM-Lock LED cannot be toggled anymore.
I waited a long time but nothing happened.
I tried the same thing again but using SW-18.0.0_GA-Build321.SFW-321.sig instead of the MR3 release. Same problem.
Does anybody out there have any idea why my really standard J1900 box runs fine with SW-17.5.10_MR-10-620.iso
but fails to install any XG v18 release and even freezes after upgrading from the running XG v17 ???
I mean this is a standard Intel Celeorn CPU, the system has 8GB of RAM and the disk is a very fast NVME 60GB disk.
Any help would be appreciated. I already tried playing with BIOS settings (Legacy versus UEFI) but nothing helped.
Regards,
Oliver
