Ubuntu 20.04 VPN Name Resolution

I'll try to keep this short and concise with helpful images where appropriate.

For Ubuntu 20.04, I download the OpenVPN config "for Android", because "for other OSs" does not work. Using the gnome network manager, I import the OpenVPN file. I'm able to connect to the VPN using my credentials and the 2FA and ssh into appropriate servers.

However, I'm having an issue with name resolution that my coworkers are not (one on a Mac, another using a physical VPN box to connect). In the configuration, by default, "Use this connection only for resources on its network" is unchecked. I can resolve network names, but cannot access external names such as www.google.com. When I check the aforementioned checkbox and reconnect, then I can access external services, but I cannot resolve names on the VPN network.

If there is any debugging I can provide to help sort this out, I'll gladly do so. My concern is that I should be able to resolve both an internal name (such as whoami.xxx.app) and an external name (such as www.google.com). Any help is appreciated.

  • Hello Troy,

Thank you for contacting the Sophos Community!

What is the tunnel deployed in the SSL VPN (Full tunnel/Split tunnel)?

If it is a full tunnel, try changing the DNS in your Ubuntu box, to use the XG as a DNS resolver.
