What is the best approach for a home lab user?

Hello All,

I am a home user with a big family and an IT person who likes to play with technology. I stumbled on Sophos because I wanted something with good DPi and Web filtering. 

I ended up installing Sophos XG 18 and running the 30 day trial..I love it. However, since then I am wondering what will happen after the 30 days? Will I lose all functionality? 

I then did some research and found there is a free UTM, I tried to get it but never got the email :) but that is another story. Don't know if UTM runs on VMware..

So my question is what is the best option for me to run on VM and continue to have web filtering and app filtering functionality? Should I stop using XG because after expiry it will be useless and get  Free UTM?and what does free UTM lack?

I don't mind spending some license cost but this is only for home so I want it reasonable.

Also these days with kids having a computer and phone and all the iot devices, I definately have more than 50 IPS.in my subnet! 

Any help and guidance in understanding my options is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

    you advised you have a big family so a UTM will probably not be suitable because it has a 50IP licence limit.

    Both XG and UTM run in VMs and are best installed using the ISO.

    After 30 days you will loose all but basic functions on the XG. You can download a free/home user licence with the limitations being 4 CPUs and 6gb of RAM. You can backup your trial licence if it has not expired and restore the backup to your home licence.

    Thank you so m uch for the clarification. So glad I can stick with XG since I already did the work for it. IT's currently installed on a VM and working well.

    for home, 6gb ram and 4 cpus is perfect! But I don't know where and how to get the free home license? I don't mind getting it now and installing it replacing the trial since it will be more represent of what I will have after trial. IF you can direct me to how to get license for XG home, that would be great.

    Why would I backup my trial license? I didn't get that part?

    Hi ,

    You can get the Sophos XG Home License on this page.

    You cannot use a Home License after applying a Trial License on your firewall, in order to use the new Home License you will need to backup all your current configuration, reinstall Sophos XG, and only restore the backup after applying the new Home license.
