Email Protection on an explicit proxy

Good day 
 
 I would like to enable email protection on my Sophos XG firewall. This firewall is set up as an explicit proxy. can this be archived when the device is not in line with the router?

 Thank you for contacting the Sophos Community! Yes, this should be possible, The mail server would need to point directly to the XG and the upstream device needs to know how to forward all SMTP traffic to the XG.
