Can't decide on Sophos XG sizing

To start, I really wish Sophos would release an updated sizing guide!

Anyway, I'm trying to size for around 25 users, but with another 50 or so spread over 5-6 site-to-site VPNs, each of which has a local breakout via an on-site XG125 (so most of their traffic would be going out via that). Right now, we have a dedicated 100/100Mb connection, but this will eventually go to 200/200 or potentially more (e.g. 500/500) in 18months or so when we next upgrade it.192.168.1.254

Even though I think an XG135 would be enough for the relatively low number10.0.0.0.1 of users, due to all the VPN access, I'm thinking an XG210 would be better or even an XG230 (but not sure if that would be overkill)? Our partner suggested an XG310, but I think that is even more overkill!

This would include Full Guard functionality in addition to WAF for couple of websites we host here.

Is an XG210 enough? or would an XG230 be better?

  • User is not User anymore. A Sizing Guide based on "You have X user, buy appliance Z" is not helpful in the current state.

The sizing is shifting to the "What throughput do you need?". Simply because there are shifting dependencies from "On prem" to Cloud Storages etc.

I can recommend to look into the new values of this document: https://www.sophos.com/en-us/medialibrary/PDFs/factsheets/sophos-xg-series-appliances-brna.pdf

There are new values in the game, as something like: Xstream SSL decryption + Threat Protection

And you can start to figure out, what do we need? What traffic do we expect to use?

So if you go to 500/500, a XG230 with DPI and Threat protection could be to small (based on the "burst" if you will see something as such).
