RED-20 devices initially added to system without WiFi card cannot be added to AP's after addition of hardware

With the current situation we have been deploying RED devices to some of our workers for them to work at home with their office IP phone and computer.  So far we have deployed about 9 of the older RED-15w's and a couple RED-20s and they have been working great.

Recently we bought 4 RED-20s and 4 of the optional WiFi cards for them. 3 of the WiFi cards were on back order.  We setup the first RED-20 with it's WiFi card and turned it on for the first time.  I added it to the system, went into Wireless -> Access Points, found it in the list at the bottom of "Pending access points" and added it.  Worked fine.  The other three I added to the system without there WiFi cards.  We then got the WiFi cards a couple days later, installed them, booted up the devices, but they are not listed under "Pending access points".  So I went to Wireless -> Access point groups and tried to manually add them but they are not listed as a device I can add.

It seems the XG only takes the initial config from the first connect and therefor doesn't see the WiFi cards.  I have tried rebooting everything with no effect.  I tried to delete a RED device and re-add it hoping it would reconfigure but it still wasn't listed under pending access points.  I have also tried doing a factory reset on the back of the device which also had no effect.

Does anyone know how to configure/add the WiFi on these once it's been "added"?  I tried the "Chat with a Expert" who kept asking me what model AP I was using and each time I explained it was a RED-20 with WiFi card they would ask again.  I also put in a support ticket but these are getting deployed tomorrow for the holidays and I'd like them to work before that happens.

  • Did you unplug the power of RED and wait for some seconds?

The RED should be reboot in this process and evaluate all plugged in devices.

Do you see any magic packets to 1.2.3.4 from the RED? So the configuration is correct?

  • Rebooted countless times.  Factory reset also.  RED device connects and works perfectly fine with wired devices, just no WiFi and no ability to add it to the WiFi access points.

This is happening, again, to 3 separate RED20 devices.  All 3 were added initially without the WiFi cards and then had them added later.  I have 3 other RED20's that all were added with the WiFi cards on the initial boot up and those all showed up under "Pending access points" and worked fine.

Also under Wireless -> Access Point Groups I can't add them to the default group....they aren't listed.  Tried creating another group and again they arn't there to be added.  It's really like the XG took the initial config from them as not having WiFi cards and they are now stuck like that.

  • Do you have activated the "Deregistration" option in XG? RED:

Enable this config set the Timer to 1 Minute or 5 Minutes, delete one RED, which does not work, and wait until XG will deauthorize the RED.

Then wait some more minutes and introduce this RED to XG again. This should delete the config from the Sophos provisioning Server.

  • Thanks , I'll do that now. Minimum setting is 5 minutes so I'll delete it, give it 10 minutes, and re-add and post back.

  • No go.  I had automatic device deautorization set to 5 minutes.  I deleted the device, it rebooted itself.  It tried to connect repeatedly and failed on contacting firewall and rebooted over and over.  Gave it 10 minutes, added it back in, it connected successfully but no option to add the AP/WiFi in.

I also turned on "Use RED Unified Firmware" to make sure it wasn't anything firmware related.  RED device did update and reboot but no change.

  • Sophos Support can actually unlock this RED and delete the config. Maybe specifically ask them to perform this task for your 3 RED serials. Delete them for now after the confirmed they are deleted, once again add them.

  • Ok, I added that to the support ticket.  Hopefully I can get a quick turnaround.

  • / Can you please watch this?

    Hi ,

Could you please check if there is any RED or AP pending firmware update under Backup & Firmware > Pattern updates > AP and RED firmware. If yes, install them and see if that helps. Also, please provide your support ticket via PM.

    Thanks,

  • There is not.  Running 3.0.0.2 on the RED's, 18.0.3 MR3 on the XG310 so everything seems to be up to date.

I do have some news though.  One of the three I'm having this issue with has been in a box since yesterday so I pulled it out to check it.  It showed up in the list as "Deauthorized" so I turned it back on and sure enough it showed up in the pending AP list.

So thank-you - I think it's just taking a while to deauthorize.  I'll go through the process with the other two, wait until they actually say "Deauthorized" and then try again.
