Sophos Connect 2.0 best performance: SSL VPN or IPSec VPN?

I see that since the release of Sophos Connect 2.0 in the Sophos documentation published since October 2020 in some places the use of SSL VPN connections is recommended and in other places IPSec VPN connections (I mean VPN connections for Windows PC).  I am very confused about this.

Could you clarify which connection offers the best performance with Sophos Connect 2.0? SSL or IPsec?

SSL VPN recommendation: news.sophos.com/.../

IPSec VPN recommendation: support.sophos.com/.../KB-000039345

Thank you.

  • The best approach is to simply use both. Because it highly depends on the use case. There are two different limiting factors, the Endpoint and the VPN gateway (XG).

For the VPN gateway, IPsec is always better in the larger scale, because Ipsec can be handled much more smoothly from a load perspective.

For the Endpoint, the load does not matter, but the connectivity is important. As sometimes Port500/4500 is closed, Port 443 TCP is likely open.

Generally speaking , MR3 increased the capability of XG for SSLVPN a lot to try to close the gap to IPsec.

  • Ok, as far as I understand, to get better performance use IPsec, and when I don't connect because of port issues use SSL VPN.
