Faulty AP55C?

Good afternoon

I lost one of my AP55C's from the configuration.

Upon looking at the AP itself, the LED is flashing rapidly green for 3-5 flashes (it's really difficult to count accurately as it's so fast) and then a slightly longer orange.

I've tried to reflash it, in case it was a duff firmware update (nothing in the logs to suggest it though) but it never connects. I've tried a couple of machines and cables just in case.

The thing is, nothing I've been able to find corresponds to anything close to this sequence.

As a troubleshooting method, I moved it from my XG18 (up to date) to a spare UTM I have (also up to date) hoping it might kick into life - nothing. Exactly the same.

The AP seems to go through a boot sequence - the solid green LED for a while then straight into the disco mode.

Any suggestions? How does one determine the warranty of an AP?

Thanks

Tony

  • Hi,

you would need to talk to your supplier and provide details about how long you have owned the AP55C.

  • I am increasingly frustrated with Sophos.

On one site, 40% of the AP30's died and had to be replaced.

Now on this one, 33% (one of the three) AP55C's have gone the same way.

Most places have a lookup tool so I can put in a serial number to check a warranty status, but why make things easy for the customer?

I am seriously considering ditching the Sophos kit now.

  • Hi,

a bit of background on the AP30s, they are no longer supported and were not a very reliable device.

as far as I can tell you get a one year warranty from sophos, some dealers offer an extended warranty, but I suspect it is a local arrangement.

  • Appreciate that the AP30's were both limited and unreliable - it cost a not insignificant amount to keep replacing them, or time and effort having to reflash them once they became unresponsive.

As well as the ones replaced I remember now that there were two that went into landfill.

I was hoping that the 55's, being considerably more expensive, would also turn out to be more reliable...looks like I might have been mistaken.

I love the XG platform but this left high and dry all the time having to chase third parties for warranty statuses etc is just becoming too onerous. I want things that just work reliably so I can concentrate on the day job - especially right now and anything that takes my focus from it so frequently (in the scheme of things) is very unwelcome.

Since it is likely I will need to replace yet another expensive AP at a cost, then this time I will simply look elsewhere.

And it makes no sense to me - HP, Dell, Cisco etc all have warranty lookup tools that take seconds.

  • I have 3 AP55s and still use 1 (AP55C). I bought the others for my sons but they decided XG was too hard to manage. I have used all 3 at various stages over 5 year period. If you replace them I would suggest an APX120, they are cheaper and provide a more reliable connection at east for my Apple devices.

From memory my AP30 used to overheat so I had to be careful where I placed it.

If you buy third party APs you will not be able to manage them from the XG.

  • Absolutely - I have pfsense built and ready. I know that XG won't manage non-Sophos AP's but at the rate they fail, I'd throw the whole lot out and start again.

Yes, it's nice to have a single point of management but not at this ongoing cost - downtime, troubleshooting, replacement etc etc

I don't think 40% and 30% failure rates are acceptable, so why on earth would I spend yet more money on another expensive Sophos AP on the off-chance (i.e. gamble) that this time, it "might" be reliable? For less than the cost of a single APX, I can get a managed mesh system, use pfsense and try for reliability that way.

At some point the capex and opex of continued failing devices just weighs too heavily against sticking with a vendor. I am on the verge of that.

And as I say above, this whole model of having to go back via vendors (which aren't always the same one - so time again to tie it into the correct one, to get in touch with them, the waiting etc) just to discover the warranty...

I appreciate you are trying to help but I am vendor agnostic - if/when one starts to become more trouble and expensive than it is worth, then I will vote with my wallet.
