XG mesh using AP55s on 2.4ghz

Hi folks,

some questions about 2.4ghz mesh and performance.

I have created a mesh using two AP55s and an AP55c on 2.4ghz for the IoT devices.

The three APs are seperated by about 10m with on in line of site and the other through internal walls.

The following screenshots show my confusion.

Why do the APs report back to each other and not through the root AP?

IoT 3.16 is within 3m of the AP55IoT1 but through a brick wall

IoT 3.17 and 3.18 are within 3m of AP55IoT2 but through a brick wall.

The issue being I would have expected the IoT devices to connect to the nearest and supposedly strongest SSID, so what is wrong?

The AP are set on dynamic channel and auto scanning. Currently they are all on CH1 and have been for a couple of days. Channel width is set to 40mhz and 100%b power.

I have tried arranging the antennea at different angles and at the moment that seems to give the best results providing the cat does not rearrange the APs.

Your thoughts

Ian

  • I have had issues with AP55s since 2017, and they have never been really fixed especially on the UTM or XG, in fact the 3 x AP50s I got from ebay are way better and also support Mesh in 5GHz (as well as 2.4GHz) why the AP55 is not able to do this is beyond me.

I have now moved the AP55s off the XG/UTM and got them on Central which is a lot more stable now they have got the firmware working correctly, unfortunately they can't do Mesh from Central.

I am wondering what to do with the spare AP55s that I have laying about... lol... any ideas
