installing XG home edition on SG105w

HI dear community,

For about 16 hours now, I'm trying to install Sophos XG on my SG105w and I can't get it to run. I'm a new customer to Sophos and so far VERY frustrated! The documentation is very weak and inconsistent.

So far I found out that I need to boot to a Ubuntu Server to format the local disk. When I boot from USB-drive it hangs on the "Loading bootLogo" screen. The same with Ubuntu Desktop edition". I've also tried it with CentOS, but there it hangs after the "Press the <ENTER> key to begin the installation process.". I've also contacted the Sophos support but the guy there was VERY incompetent.
How do I get this thing to fly? It‘s officially documented that I CAN use a XG Home on a SG105w appliance . I‘m a new customer to Sophos to try out the products, to decide if I want to use it in professional environments too. I really hope that I will start to have a good experience with Sophos products.

Thanks for your help.

  • Yes... you can install XG on a SG105w but only version 17.5. Version 18 requires 4GB RAM and upgrading the SG105 to 4GB won’t help as it is recognized as such when installing regardless how much RAM you put in it. That’s why I just ordered a brand new XG 106 w which I shouldn’t have... See below.

I don’t know what you are using to install but I assume an USB stick. I use Rufus to create the bootable stick and you must set to „DD“. This works fine.

I’d like to use this opportunity to complain about the licensing of XG Firewall. I really appreciate Sophos giving us a free home use license but I don’t see what the point is of not being able to install it on a Sophos appliance with all the functionality a user has that installs it on some home built hardware. I just ordered a brand new SG106W to jump to XG only to find out that I can’t use my home license on it without sacrificing the built in WiFi. Now, does this make sense? Please don’t try to explain, because you can’t. Even with the restrictions the home license has, for that money I can build a rocket of an appliance for home use plus APs. Why don’t you want customers to buy Sophos hardware for home use? This box is going back first thing when it gets here for a full refund. Sorry Sophos, but I am very disappointed. I know I should have looked this up before ordering, but I wasn’t expecting that.

Fugufish and all others... My advice is to stick with UTM for as long as possible if you own a SG model with WiFi, you get all the bells and whistles. The upgrade to 4 GB works fine and more won’t be needed for UTM, so don’t bother with 8GB.
