License sophos xg virtual appliance

Hi All,

I have created a XG virtual appliance and activated a trial on setup.

I registered the appliance and it appeared in the mysophos portal, but not in the cloud.sophos.com under firewall. Support managed to add it to the cloud portal but now I am unable to assign a subscription to it and it is running as an eval license.

Have I missed a step? I have the option to request virtual firewall, in which I could license during setup of a new firewall. But I just want to license my existing firewall which is up and running in Azure.

Any tips?

Thanks

  • Hi Daniel,

Registering an XG Firewall with MySophos doesn't set up the XG Firewall for Management in Central Admin. Central Admin is a completely different portal. Firewall Management in Central Admin is setup either using the Light Touch USB Method for New XG Firewalls or via Synchronized Security.

How to setup Synchronized Security can be found here - https://youtu.be/9bWPvxaSQLo

There are two types of Virtual XG Firewalls for MSP FLEX. First is the XG Firewall that has a Purchased Base License. This is the base license for the Cores and RAM for the XG Firewall. Once purchased an MSP FLEX Partner can then assign a Monthly Subscription to the Virtual XG Firewall. Second, is Virtual Firewall as a Service for MSP Flex Partners. This license is created from the Sophos Central Partner Dashboard and includes the Base License and Subscription at a Monthly Cost.

Trial Virtual XG Firewalls can only be converted to a Purchased Base License.

If you desire a Virtual Firewall as a Service license, you will need to first create the desired license which will then give you a serial number. You will then need to deploy a new XG Firewall using that serial number during the Setup Wizard. You can then backup and restore your current configuration if needed.

There is no way to convert a trial to a Virtual Firewall as a Service and no way to transfer the VFWaaS License to another Serial Number.

For more information on Virtual Firewall as a Service and XG Licensing you can go here - https://youtu.be/GcCbS61FdqM

  • Understood Steve, I appreciate the response.

I will bite the bullet and reset the Sophos in Azure.

Would this be as simple as: SSH to Sophos in Azure > option 5 > open 1 (RESET) > Restore config.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, if I reset my Azure Sophos from the console, will it retain the Network information for me to be able to login to it again?

  • You will need to reload the XG Firewall from the Azure Marketplace. A factory reset will not remove the current serial number. Simply spin up a new XG Firewall in Azure. Backup your current and then restore the configuration into the new XG Firewall after you apply the correct Serial Number.
