License sophos xg virtual appliance

Hi All,

I have created a XG virtual appliance and activated a trial on setup.

I registered the appliance and it appeared in the mysophos portal, but not in the cloud.sophos.com under firewall. Support managed to add it to the cloud portal but now I am unable to assign a subscription to it and it is running as an eval license.

Have I missed a step? I have the option to request virtual firewall, in which I could license during setup of a new firewall. But I just want to license my existing firewall which is up and running in Azure.

Any tips?

Thanks

  • You can perform a license transfer.

It will move the purchase license asset to the Serial of your current installation.

As licenses are attached to serialnumbers, you cannot change the serialnumber of a XG. Its locked after the setup.

  • Thanks LuCar, I have requested a new virtual firewall with the aim to license transfer. However in the licensing portal the new virtual firewall I requested its not an option to transfer from, I assume as it is an MSP monthly license. Not sure why I cannot just login to the portal and assign a license to my virtual firewall.

  • Requesting a MSP virtual Appliance will give you a Serialnumber. This SN should be used to setup the new Firewall and register to your MySophos.

If you already register the target device with another SN, you need to perform the License Transfer.

The License transfer can only be used, if the source device is register to the same MySophos as the target device.

I am not 100% sure, this license transfer will work for MSP Licenses. Simply try it: Start a VM with XG on it. Login to 172.16.16.16, use your MSP Serialnumber and register it to your MySophos. After registration, disable the VM. Go to MySophos, both Appliances should be visible and you should be able to transfer the License.

  • Thank you for your efforts Lucar,

I understand the process for licensing the MSP virtual appliances going forward now.

I created a local vm and registered a new device to My Sophos with an MSP license. However it does not appear under the eligible  source device list on the transfer license page :/

Is there any way this can just be updated on the backend without me having to re-create my production kit?

  • Hi Daniel - please raise a case with customer care giving the source and target serial number, we should be able to sort this out for you.
