Help please - Sophos XG on Protectli and 3 Asus ai-mesh devices - Next steps for better network performance

I just got my XG up and running and while I am a newbie, I did work out I have to go essentially from xg lan to Asus router lan port which has caused some issues I believe with performance. Are there options with technology that will allow me to use the WAN port on the router for connectivity? The ai-mesh isn't very robust since adding the firewall. I am not tied to any one option, just hoping to not spend a lot more... Currently - I have the below. Since adding the XG, the mesh devices are now meshed as "access point" nodes,

Option I'm considering is leaving as is but switching to ethernet backhaul which will provide better bandwidth. I am just not sure what other options there are and looking for some help with options if anyone has anyone. I'm good with up to a few hundred extra dollars, but would prefer less of course....

Protectli I5 6port for the XG

ROG RT 5300 as the main router and 3 AC86Us as the nodes.
