Upgrading XG115v3 to XG125v3 - can I backup and restore the configuration?

Hello - support recently approved a hardware upgrade to go from an XG115v3 to an XG125v3. I don't have a complex configuration on the firewall, but for the sake of time I'm wondering if I can use backup and restore to setup the new XG125? I googled a little and found the below link, but it's like gibberish to me. I think it says I can go up in hardware maybe?

https://support.sophos.com/support/s/article/KB-000036245?language=en_US

The current XG115 is having issues, and I've already replaced with another XG115 where I setup the config from scratch then. The config doesn't seem to be issue, so I feel a backup/restore would save me time and avoid overlooking something. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Basically this will work.

Unless one of those appliances is a Wireless Appliance (W Modell).

    You can always jump "higher".

Downgrades are possible unless you switch from Rack modell to desktop.

  • So I tried this last night and it did not work.

I got this error: Operation failed. Please upgrade IPS and application signatures to latest version for this restore.

I manually set the IP on the new XG, so it had internet and then updated the IPS and app signatures. The restore still failed with the same message. Reading other posts it would seem I needed the XG to have the exact same firmware and signatures as restore. I had support load the same firmware on the new XG, and the old XG was backed up right before I started. I did not try to fix it because I had already taken things offline and just went into setting up from scratch instead.

More annoying than anything. My setup is not hard, but I hate the idea of doing manually thinking I might forget something.

  • Hi,

what is the version the xg125 is running and what was the xg115 running?

  • SFOS 17.5.12 MR-12.HF062020.1 on both units. I specifically requested support install the same version on the replacement XG125.

  • Hi,

if the  new machine has been online for a couple of hours all the updates (assuming you have enabled auto update) should have been processed and your backup should install.

If not, then it is time to start another support case.

  • Sophos is moving forward to avoid such a issues in the future. MR14 for example does not have Hotfixes. This situation is only caused by old Installations (i know, can still be the case).

  • Hi Lucar Toni,

thank you for the update and noted for future reference. The fix does not apply in thi case because both XGs is using MR12.
