XG home on Acer Revo 3610 with Single NIC

Hi,

My first post here, hoping for some advice. I have an old Nettop that I wish to use for XG home for a 4 user, 60M up, 40M down FTTC line. System is "Dual core Intel Atom 330, 2 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard-drive"

The issue is, only one Ethernet port is present and there is no expansion slot to add another.

1. Is there a way to make XG use Ethernet as WAN and the built-in WiFi as LAN?

2. Any recommended USB>Ethernet adapters that may solve the issue?

3. If none of the above is feasible, can I use the processor on a new barebone case and start building a new system?

 4. Finally, is this processor even suitable for my speeds?

Many thanks in advance,

Raj

  • Hi Raj,

you will  need at least 4gb of ram. You will also need to install a second NIC, or add more ram and use a vm. The cpu will be quite slow.

  • Thanks , you have answered all my questions. Looks like it may go back in to storage and I will look at a new build.

  • On a different note, found a fanless PC, Celeron J1900 Quad Core 2.0GHz, 4GB DDR3, 64GB SSD for around 80 quid, is it worth getting this? Just want to make sure Celeron is good enough and future proof..

  • as mentioned before the atom 330 is totally insufficient.

the XG firewall needs much more cpu and ram power than the (in my opinion better) UTM.

But for your small environment the j1900 should be enough to handle the XG and the <10 users and <50mbit/s.

A friend of me is using such a device with sophos utm and the cpu is idling mostly about 8% usage.

On a personally test device I also run XG and with 4 VMs and 2-3 wlan clients the cpu usage is also about 10-15% - but no heavy usage. But in downloading with activated IPS, AV Proxy, WebFilter I only get about 60mbit/s...without any performance / configuration tuning.
