Network Gateway Selection

Hi all, we recently purchased XG550 and a Dell Switch for our new office, the network guy who used to manage left the job and I am not pro at networking. My Dell switch and Servers have a 40Gb interface while my XG550 has only default 1G ports. My problem is that my LAN to LAN traffic is huge. I want to ask if I assign my servers and PCs firewall gateway, will my network run on 1G or should I use Dell switch gateway which has a 40G interface.

  • Hi,

the DELL switch should manage all internal data flows, very little should be passed to the XG, but that will depend on your DNS and whether you are using an AD and DHCP setup?

  • Hi, thanks for replying. We have an AD server in our office and we have like more than 400 employees, that's why we will need DHCP. So I should use Dell switch as my gateway and enable DHCP on that switch? Also, I don't understand the DNS thing you wrote, I mean should I have to make a DNS server also?

  • Hello Satyam,

Thank you for contacting the Sophos Community!

Is your Dell device capable of routing (L3 switch) or you have VLANs configured ending in the XG?

You can configure either the Dell or XG as a DHCP server, but this would depend on your network configuration, also you could opt for a Windows Server to handle the DHCP.
