UTM vs XG? - Home

Hi

Looking here :

People say the UTM has more features, or that it's more fully pledged and to only use the UTM should you need it but I'm not sure what the real difference is between the UTM offering and the XG (home) firewall, other than the IP address limitation on the UTM and a higher spec of hardware being "allowed"

What else does it offer?

  • Hi,

the XG offers IMAP scanning. A different approach to url and application filtering.

Thanks. Does that really provide any real functional difference?

  • Hi,

from a home user point of view probably not. There are other advantages just I have not used a UTM for some years so I am behind i the differences.

There aks some negatives if you wish to use IPv6, DNSand DHCP integration, reporting, logs.

V18 has a new faster scanning engine which does not slow processing down like the web proxy, though having said that the release of MR-2 and MR-3 should improve its filtering.

If you are looking for a software firewall to practice security settings then XG uses the current techniques.

  • I used to be a UTM user for home but when I was looking for a product to sell to our customers I also looked at XG and started to use it at home from the pre-release of v18.

I do not have any inside knowledge but from what I have seen and read, my opinion is that Sophos sees XG as the future. It makes no sense to sell two products that basically do the same job and I would be very surprised if Sophos drop one of them at some stage in the future and I am gambling that it is UTM they drop.

That is the main reason I switched from UTM to XG. Feature wise they are fairly equivalent now but if there is something unusual you particularly need then check first. I personally much prefer the XG interface even though it is not perfect.
