XG Home Software Edition on the SG 135 Rev. 3

Hello, everyone,

I have already found some posts on the subject. But at the end there is usually no clear result.

Hence my question:
Does the XG Home Software Edition V18 or V17.5 run on the SG 135 Rev. 3?

Do all network ports work?

Who uses the SG 135 Rev. 3 with the XG Home Software Edition?

Thanks for an answer.

Many greetings
Felix

  • Hi Felix,

in general Sophos Home Editions work on Hardware Appliances as well.
What sometimes can happen is that the mapping of hardware interfaces to the virtual Ports is buggy but you can handle this via changing MAC adresses on the appliance. I have a SG125 Rev. 2 and it works like a charm. I do not have any experience running a Home Edition on an SG135 :/

    Cheers

  • In V18, you are able to rename most of those Ports, Therefore you could rename eth0/1/2/3 to Port X Y Z to map workaround this limitation.

    Or you change the Limitation.

Sophos XG Home is a Software based ISO. So you need to install this Software version on the XG/SG Hardware. XG Home does not care, if the Hardware, it is running on, is a SG/XG Appliance or a self made Installation.

  • Thank you all.

So, Can you confirm, that all network ports on the SG 135 working in XG Home SW-Edition?
The right order is nice to have, but all right working is important.

    Have a nice sunday.

    Many greetings
    Felix

  • Hi Felix

please remember that we are only humans and not gods and therefore we cannot guarantee that everything will work 100% from the beginning.

What I can tell you is that the Home Edition can definitely be installed and you can set it up. Many of us in this community have installed the XG Home-Edition on SG Appliances and it worked out! IT is always a bit of a try & error, that's what our daily job is all about.

Remember, if in doubt, make a backup of the old config and you can still install the UTM Home Edition on the appliance if you are not comfortable with XG.

We are always available to answer any further questions you may have and will help you if you get stuck.

So consider it as a small project to get the Home Edition up and running and just have fun.  Enjoy your weekend!

    Best regards

  • Hi Intrusus,

thanks. I didn't want any guarantee... but a little safety before I buy a used SG 135. ;-)

    I will report my experience.

I hope the XG runs well and will be a good replacement for my UTM.

    Best regards

    Felix

  • I can't answer your connection for an SG 135 but I've run Home Edition on both an SG 125 (rev 2) and an SG 430 and all eight network interfaces have worked on both.

  • Hi together,

I bought a used SG 135 Rev. 3 yesterday and all works with XG 18 Home (GA Build 354).

The NIC order is identical to default sorting in Debian from ETH0 to ETH8.

At first all I211 ethernet interfaces (ETH4 to ETH7 on my SG appliance) with ascending MAC addresses order (on XG port 1 to port 4; last MAC byte: f2 to f5).
At second the I210 fiber interface (ETH8 on my SG appliance, on XG port 5; last MAC byte: f6).
At third all X553 ethernet interfaces (ETH0 to ETH3 on my SG appliance) with ascending MAC addresses order (on XG port 6 to port 9; last MAC byte: ee to f1).

All NICs are working! (Additional hint: On SG the network interfaces numbered from 0 to n. On XG the network interfaces numbered from 1 to n.)

In my case I renamed the interfaces in the XG 18 webgui to represent the mapping.

Not working is the status LED. The LED is continuously flashing.

Anybody knows, how can I let the LED continuously lighting? Is there a config parameter or command/script or to control the LED like the displays in XG Home on HW appliances?

Thanks all and have a nice day.

    Felix
