[XG 18] WAN links - definition of "weight"?

What's the definition of "weight" for WAN-links? The documentation isn't very clear on this:

Weight

Priority of the gateway to be used for allocating traffic. This value determines how much traffic will pass through the link in relation to the other available links.

What does "weight" signify? Ratio? Priority?

Also, is it ascending or descending?
