Migrate xg virtual home backup to xg 210rev.3 licensed.

Hello guys,

I've been running xg virtual appliance at home in an esxi machine and today I've purchased a xg 210 rev3 appliance with a license. Now, my question is that how can I move my current configuration to the new appliance? Just backup from home version and restore on the new appliance after installing license etc?.

Regards,

  • Take a look at the following KBA: https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/124585

Should work. Backup / restore is a good way to go.

BTW: If you run a virtual appliance, it should not be a Home license! Home is only for privat / personal usage, not for PoC / trial approaches.

  • Hi LuCar,

I was running the virtual appliance home license due to the wait time provided by reseller for xg 210 appliance, it took almost 3 weeks to arrive and another 4 days for the license which arrived today.

I've seen that KBA but I have one doubt which I'd like to clear, when you restore a backup, does it also replace licenses and sophos account the firewall is connected to?

I'd really appreciate your response here.

    Thank you

  • In my experience (which has only been restoring backups to replacement hardware) the licenses are not part of the backup.  That's stored in a different configuration area on the appliance (whether "real" or virtual).  I always have to go thru the license transfer process (which is now quite easy, thankfully, used to not be) when we replace a customer's failed XG appliance, even after restoring the backup.
