Best appliance HW to flash XG free edition

My friend would like me to flash a small Sophos appliance for him with the free edition of XG for lite and more secure home use.

Which appliance do you recommend? SG105? UTM 110/120? It's hard to find the CPU specs on these units.

Looking to spend ~$150 on a used appliance on Ebay and would like to get the most bang for buck on an appliance that will be easy to flash.

  • Hi,

forget about the XG105 is it not upgradeable to v18 of XG. You need to provide more details about your friends home requirements eg link speed, number devices.

  • Thanks for your reply.

He is a light user and only 2 people in household with 10 devices (2 computers, 2 phones, 2 Apple TV, tv over IP...). He doesn't even know his internet speed but my guess would be 300mbs).

Would love to know what you think good options are.

  • Hi,

your friend will need a device that has at least 4gb of RAM. Also you would need a device that has 4 real cores because the home licence does not take full advantage of the extra components in Sophos hardware XG. You would be looking at something like a SG/XG 210 to utilise the 300mb/s link.

  • Basically, you would have to flash the XG105 appliance anyways to get a software appliance for XG Home. So it would not matter, if its a XG105 with 4 GB RAM, if you simply replace the RAM like  always points out.

  • forget about the XG105 is it    usa today protonmail not upgradeable to v18 of XG. You need to provide more details about your friends home requirements eg link speed, number devices.

  • So I have a 105 that I just extended a year of support as I was told by the vendor it would be fully supported on v18.  Is there somewhere official this lack of support is noted so I can rectify while in the first 30 days of the purchase?  It is disapointing I just purchased this fw 1 year ago and it is already on the EOL list.  Thanks

  • Hi,

your vendor has advised you incorrectly. The newer version is the XG106 which has additional memory required to run v18.

A search of the forums will provide you with the information you require and maybe you need to find a partner rather than a vendor.

  • Your vendor lied to you.

During summer 2019, Sophos CLEARLY published X105 would not be portable to v18.

More for marketing reasons than REAL technical ones.  Increasing ram to 8 gig, and swaping SATA SSD to a +300 MB/S SSD (which probably means 256 Gig and +) would cost around $89 and turn an X105 to a faster device than a X115 is.

  • Thanks.  My friend decided to go with a less maintenance solution, but I appreciate the feedback.

With regard to the xg 105, without naming the vendor as I am not sure if that violates any code here, they are an official Sophos partner.  After they admitted the 105 would not in fact support v18, they provided several shady solutions which would have had me pay more than retail for a new 106.  Without going into details, I ended up paying full price for a new 106 (price was offset by the money I already paid for a 1 year service contract I could not use.

End result, I will never do business with this particular company.  I hope this 106 is supported for all upgrades for at least 3 years....

  • Again, I am not sure the XG105 does not support the free v18.  But it cannot support the paid version.

One day, I'll test it with SSD + Memory upgrade ...

  • but what remains is the cpu-bottleneck of the xg105 which will resulting in about 80mbit/s (depending on activated features etc).
