Reports - groups of categories

We'd like to bring our XG's reporting up to standards that help our safeguarding team by emailing scheduled reports. These are easy to set up, however the reports themselves leave much to be desired unless we have *many* of them.

So, the easiest way I could see to achieve what we need (which is to see requests from blocked categories up against the usernames, dates, times etc) would be if we could group categories.

Reporting by category is easy, however theres just over 20 categories in total we need to report on. Those break down to 5 categories which would be compliant with educational standards - adult/explicit content, extremism/violence/weapons, suicide, drugs and one just for our use, unethical/hacking. Each would contain a number of appropriate categories, for instance the Adult/Explicit Content would need to contain the existing categories Adult Websites, Extreme, Nudity, Personals & Dating, Sexually Explicit and Swimwear & Lingerie.

Reporting only allows single categories from what I can see. Can we group categories into a larger one so we only have 5 schedule reports, or is there another way of achieving the same outcome?

  • Hi

Unfortunately, we cannot modify the categories and reports as per your requirement, I would request you to submit your idea at https://ideas.sophos.com

  • Many thanks; there's already an idea but with only 1 vote (2 including mine) so I'm not  very optimistic of it's chances!

The issue appears to be quite clear that doesn't need modification of categories; nearly all other UTMs  are able to report on groups of categories yet XG cannot (I'm sure even Sophos UTM could from memory!) ; this is the one thing that puts XG behind other providers and very likely to be a deciding factor when it's time for renewal :(

  • You would base your renew on reports not security?

  • It is a large factor. Education IT has a few requirements surrounding safeguarding, and products must be able to report on given categories; adult content, mental health (suicide/depression), PREVENT strategies (anti-terrorism, extremism etc). Whilst the product is compliant, that means running a scheduled report on a good couple of dozen separate categories to tick all of the boxes; whilst we couldn't care about that too much, it's a bit much for an end user who has no idea what an IP address is or why visiting one website generates a couple hundred hits on different addresses.

It's easily possible; products like Fastvue collate this information easily, however it's a *lot* of money. My next option is to schedule all these reports and knock something up to collate the CSV outputs into the above "super-categories" so to speak. So it's not me throwing toys out of the pram, it's trying to remain fully compliant with rules we must abide by plus making life a little easier for our safeguarding leads.

I have no doubts about XG's security ability; I'm of firm believe it's the best in the business, having used others (SW, LS, BLX, NS etc) extensively it's above and beyond all of them.
