AP 55 Limitations on Sophos XG Home Edition? (XG 125 Hardware Appliance)

I have a Sophos XG 125 appliance running Sophos XG Home edition. I plan to purchase an AP55. Will the access point plug and play the same as it would with the hardware ISO? Will there be any limitations? 

I have an Asus AC68U running in access point mode currently, but I'm unable to create and use multiple SSIDs and create Guest network. I'm hoping the AP 55 compatibility will help to resolve this / make things a bit easier. (The end goal is to create two Wifi networks. One for everyday use and one for family and friends usage).

    Hi,

    the AP55 is compatible and works well. You can all the things you want.

    I have AP55 and an AP55c. I have 4 SSIDs. 

    I would suggest you go for one of the newer APX eg an APX320 they have more features.

    That's great to hear! Though the base firewall license is mostly all I need, I figured having the additional features with a home license is always nice to have (I wasn't sure if the plug n play feature I see on so many Sophos videos would become disabled/buggy with a modified home XG appliance). 

     

    What new features do the APX series offer and can they be wall mounted? The AP55 seemed like a solid choice as one side of my house has vaulted ceilings (which is where my home office is). There just isn't a way to cleanly ceiling mount an AP55C.

    Hi,

    you can install a full home licence on your XG hardware. You will need to add the wifi function to your licence.  I have added a link to an Australian site that does have the details of the APX320 .

    Sorry I'm a little confused. Are you saying that you can add a home license key to the original hardware ISO on a hardware appliance? (If so, this would have saved the trouble of wiping the drive) 

     

    The method I used, was to wipe the drive on the XG 125 using Ubuntu. I then installed the home software onto the appliance from a USB stick (I think using a guide you created actually). All has been well with the exception of some odd port assignments.

    With this method in mind, will I need to purchase an add-on license for the wifi to work? Or is it simply a case of switching on wifi protection. 

     

    To be honest, all I really wanted was a solid firewall appliance with active firmware updates, logging abilities, VPN and a separate access point. I believe the hardware ISO would have allowed all of this, but I wasn't sure if I had to buy a number of subscriptions I simply wasn't interested in.

    So you have it right.  To clarify for all involved:

     

    • There are no limitations when using the Software or Virtual SFOS (XG) Home License software, other than no Sandstorm, and restrictions on RAM and CPU cores (I think 6GB and 2 cores).
    • The OP is correct; you cannot load a home license on a system running a hardware ISO (like an original XG125 for example).  The only way to run the home license on such a device is to wipe it and reload with the software ISO (which works fine).
    • The base appliance license includes Wireless, so even if you let any added feature licenses expire on a "real" XG appliance, the wireless functionality will still work.  You of course lose web filtering, etc. though.

    Thank you for the detailed update. The home limitations are 6gb and 4 cores.

    What a great community, I really appreciate everyone taking the time to break my questions down. I think I have a solid understanding of the licensing.
