Setup a USB to Network Interface on laptop for use with XG Firewall Home Edition.

I am trying to use an old HP Laptop to run XG Firewall Home Edition for my network.

The laptop only has one network interface and no way to add another except to use a USB to Network Interface adapter. When I do this the software does not see the USB adapter and goes into Failsafe mode.

I have gone into the Advanced Shell from the main menu but I can not do anything. i.e. create a directory, use chpasswd to change roots password, etc. It keeps telling me that the file system is read only.

I need to be able to load the drivers for the USB-NI adapter from the CD that came with it so I can finish the install.

I hope that this is the correct place to post this question.

Any and all help is appreciated.

  • what are the specs of the laptop....

I have the same setup on an old laptop (asus) and they way that I did it was to install virtualisation software, anyone software will do (except hyper-v) but I used Proxmox....

You can then install the USB to Ethernet drivers into proxmox and then install Sophos as a virtual machine..  Here is a link on USB to ethernet on proxmox  (https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/use-additional-usb-nic-not-detected.40811/)

I have a 500mb internet connection and I notice zero slowdown using proxmox and sophos as a VM. (laptop has 8gig RAM and I set Sophos to 6gig (Home Licence Limit)

    Hope this helps
