Rudimentary help in loading and installing XG Firewall

Just to be sure: XG is a firewall product. You are going to install on a laptop a firewall product without any GUI etc. 

The GUI is used via browser connecting to this product. 

You will have most likely only one interface, so a firewall product is not "that useful". 

Thank you for your reply.  GUI, huh?  You mean as opposed to command line entry.  I have done some, remember DOS 3.1?  No of course you don't, you weren't even born then.

I'd almost forgotten what it felt like to be mansplained to.  So here it is...

I surmise that this particular firewall will be placed on my network to:

* inspect traffic

* provide email scans for incoming maliciousness and outgoing for confidential information and document attachments

* provide VPN (virtual private network) protection for my user's web browsing, streaming, etc.

* provide reporting on what is traversing and poking at my network

* provide IDS/IPS services

* contain lists of known malicious IPs and block them and allow me to enter IPs that I find suspicious or are suspicious

* learn my network and alert me to out of ordinary activity

So yeah, if this is what XG does then that's what I want.

I will be using the Home XG product that is supposed to be usable on any Intel machine. I'm a sole proprietor with a scant budget and need to protect my and my client's data.

Are you telling me that I need dual NICs and my laptop doesn't have that?

I am also putting together an info sec program that sole proprietors and small businesses can understand and use. Your lawyer is a sole proprietor or works in a small business, do you think he has a clue what GUI is? or your dentist?

You're right I don't have the knowledge that you do, but I will, and when I do I will be formidable; and I promise you I will ask some questions before I assume I'm dealing with a complete idiot.

By the way, I feel the first response was wanting you to be successful. So pointing out the hardware, cause I would tend to agree, is likely going to be a limiting factor. However, each situation is different. So, give it a try and let us know.

Just want to make sure, what you have to except. Saw couple of requests and those people asked about Sophos Home (The AV product). 

Single Interface XGs are possible but most likely not the best way to handle such setups. 

And do not forget, if you are a Sophos Partner, you are able to request Not for resell hardware (NFR). 

Sophos XG Home is limited by home use and not allowed to be used in Commercial setups.

Thank you all for your 'concern'.  I have since found a company that is willing to partner with me to accomplish my goals.  Too bad, Sophos is missing a HUGE opportunity.

Do you think these sole proprietors will be single user entities for long?  Nope.  Sophos had a chance to grow with these owners/users.  Totally missed the mark.

As I mentioned earlier - I spoke to Sophos business sales and home sales and they directed me to the home use XG firewall product for what I want to accomplish.  I didn't try to swindle anyone.

you have asked for help on user to user forum where occasionally Sophos staff and other very smart users assist. You have not liked the answers you have received from a non English native language person, LuCar who is very helpful and knowledgable.

The XG can be installed on a laptop but usually requires a VM (like) to provide the pretend 2nd interface unless you have a gaming laptop that comes with two interfaces.

Putting a firewall on a single connection as you plan exposes your internal network to attack regardless of what your supplier advises because the WWW is on the same physical connection as your PCs etc.

An old PC would be a better device to build a firewall on because you can add compatible  LAN cards.

Also with the home XG you do not get access to the full business features eg sandstorm.

Another point is, if you want to build up a business with Sophos, you have to be registered as a Sophos Partner.

So you can sell our products as a partner.

Sophos Home (XG) is not for commercial resellers. You are not allowed to sell this product to a business partner.
