XG Firewall Home Edition on XG 135 Rev. 3

Hello

I'm trying to flash the XG 135 Rev. 3 with XG Home.
When trying to flash it with an USB it returns the error of "Detected Sophos physical device".
I've read that you can do away with this by removing some partitions with GParted.
However GParted doesn't seem to boot. Other Live-USBs with a GUI don't seem to boot as well E.G.: SystemRescue.

Does anyone have experience with this?

  • Hi,

you will not be able to boot anything from the standard XG hardware because of the security on the system. I suspect you will need to remove the disk and modify it on another machine. Please do a search of the forums because you are not the first to attempt/succeed in doing this.

  • Hello Quadra

I flashed my XG 115 Rev.3 two days ago wit XG Home.
I strugled also with Gparted. At the end, I booted GParted "save mode" on my appliance. Then it was working (created a ext/4 partition)

XG Home is running so far good, besides:

    - Ports are "shifted by one": physical port 1 one is actually port 2 in the Sophos operating system
    - Status led is always blinking instad of permanent green.

    What error do you have?

    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • Hello Patrick

When trying to flash the XG 135 with Home I get "Detected Sophos physical device".
When I try to boot with GParted I just get a black screen.
I'm sure the USB works as it does work on another regular computer.

  • Hi,

i used a Ubuntu 18 Server DVD and booted from ext DVD ROM Drive.

Ubuntu boots and installs a Server System.

This kills all Sophos Partitions and you can install the software appliance from DVD.

  • When trying to boot with Ubuntu Server I get the following.

    SYSLINUX 6.03 EDD 2014-10-06 Copyright (C) 1994-2014 H. Peter Anvin et al
    Loading bootlogo...

    This stays on screen forever.

  • This Looks like USB Boot with Rufus to me.

Did you used a DVD Drive?

I think you Need a UEFI Boot Method with a USB Stick.

I tried with usb but failed everytime.

I had installed the Software appliance with my SG105w

  • I used an USB because I do not have an external DVD Drive.
I'll try to get one and let you know how it went.

  • Alright, I did manage to do this.

First connect a screen and a keyboard to the firewall, this does not work over the console cable.
Also connect an USB DVD drive.

Burn the GParted ISO to a DVD via Rufus and boot it.
Once loaded choose other boot options and pick the load into RAM option.
Typ "forcevideo" in the cmd to launch the graphical interface.
There you have to option to remove the current partition, do so.
Make a new partition, I chose FAT32 and press Apply.
Remove the GParted DVD and insert the Sophos Home DVD and reboot.

This worked for me, hopefully it will work for you too.
I hope we can ditch the DVD drive in the future.

I did notice that the upper 4 ports (1-4) are not working.
I had to use port 5 for LAN and 6 for WAN.

  • Hi there,

thank you very much for your post - it helped me alot.

Now i do have this wonderfull XG135 piece of hardware running with the XG home edition.

I also notice the same issue, that port 1-4 are not working. I also had to use port5 for lan, port6 for wan.

Did you manage to get this working somehow?

Do you know, if Port9 is working? what about extension cards like 4g module?

I know the post is old, but maybe you'll read it and have an answer.

    Thanks alot.
