    i had the same problem with the FW upgrade from 17.5.3 to 17.5.4
    There must be a bug with exim.

    I had used the FQDN of my mail server under System / Administration / Notification settings.
    I had checked (o) external mail server and entered the FQDN of mail server DNS entry.

    I used Split DNS for my Domains ..

    This was working fine with FW 17.5.3 and older, but not with 17.5.4 and newer.

    Please change your Mail Server Entry from FQDN to IP Address.

    Next, i used my internal IP from my mail server and the problem was solved.
