I suggest you use Open-source computing hardware, it is great hardware so far, I personally use this and it's good for me I bought it from Reecoupons by using Online coupons, and also use two CPU, in one CPU it will not work properly.

if you plan to go to V18 and want to experiment with settings you will be very frustrated with a j1900 processor, way to slow. If you are a set and forget type of guy, the J1900 will handle a 100/40 link without any issues.

which hardware would you recommend? Would a quadcore J3160 or J3455 be sufficient (both with AES-NI)?

I tried the I3 and I5s but decided they generated too much heat and went back to the e3 series.

As a home user you need the fastest CPU you can get.

Now you say, but Sophos use lower power devices in their small XGs which is true, but they are designed as set and forget with the hardware tuned to provide the best performance where as the home licence has no tuning.

As you can see from my signature I run a e3-1225 which runs around 20-30w after booting but due to a limitation in the XG software I cannot remove the extra two NICs.

Agree, I'm using an Intel Atom® E3845 and mulling upgrading the hardware or move to another firewall vendor (untangle or pfsense),
